Cambridge IGCSE Syllabus Reference
1. Calculate Probability of a Single Event
Definition: Probability measures how likely an event is to occur. It is expressed as a number between 0 and 1.
P(event) = Number of favorable outcomes รท Total possible outcomes
โจ Key Points:
- Probability of 0 โ Event is impossible
- Probability of 1 โ Event is certain
- All probabilities are between 0 and 1 (inclusive)
๐ Example 1:
What is the probability of rolling a 4 on a fair six-sided die?
Favorable outcomes: 1 (only the number 4)
Total possible outcomes: 6
P(rolling a 4) = 1/6
2. The Probability Scale
Impossible
Even Chance
Certain
P = 0
0 < P < 0.5
P = 0.5
0.5 < P < 1
P = 1
3. Complementary Events
P(A) + P(A') = 1
Where A' means "not A"
๐ฏ Useful Formulas:
4. Combined Events
AND Rule (Independent Events)
Example: Rolling two sixes: 1/6 ร 1/6 = 1/36
OR Rule (Mutually Exclusive)
Example: Rolling a 3 or 5: 1/6 + 1/6 = 1/3
OR Rule (Non-Mutually Exclusive)
Example: Drawing a King or Heart from cards
5. Quick Reference - All Formulas
P(A) = Favourable รท Total
P(A') = 1 โ P(A)
RF = Occurrences รท Trials
EF = Probability ร Trials
๐ฏ Exam Success Tips
Always write down each step - marks are given for method!
Use fractions unless asked for decimals/percentages
Probability must be between 0 and 1!
Label ALL branches with probabilities
